Welcome to Buffalo: Brandon Spikes (LB)

Name: Brandon Spikes

Position: MLB

Age: 26

Height: 6'2

Weight: 255 lbs.

College: Florida

Drafted: 2nd Round, 62nd overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots

Previous NFL Team: New England Patriots

Contract Figures: Signed with the Bills on March 14th, 2014 - 1 Year, $3.25 Million Total in 2014.

Brandon Spikes was born in Shelby, North Carolina where he was rated the #1 HS prospect in the state and #33 in the country. He was selected to play in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Spikes attended the University of Florida where he played for Urban Meyer for four years spanning from 2006-2009. He was an extremely decorated LB at the conclusion of his college career. His career stats included 39 starts at LB, 307 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 4 recovered fumbles and 6 interceptions, 4 of them being returned for touchdowns.

Spikes won a championship in all four of his years at Florida between the SEC Championship and BCS National Championship but never both in the same season. Spikes won an SEC Championship in both 2006 and 2008 and a BCS National Championship in 2007 and 2009. Spikes was 1st team All-SEC from his Sophomore year through Senior year (2007-2009) and was an All-American in both his Junior & Senior year (2008-2009).

Brandon Spikes wrapped up his illustrious college career as a National Champion when his Gators beat the Oklahoma Sooners 24-14. Spikes had 7 tackles, 2 QB hurries and 1 pass breakup. The next step was the NFL draft.

Spikes was drafted in the 2nd round by our rival New England Patriots, 62nd overall where he became an instant starter along fellow SEC LB, Jerod Mayo. Spikes was a productive player in the NFL during his rookie year before being suspended for the final 4 games of the season for a failed drug test relating to his ADHD medication.

Spikes remained a consistent, solid player vover the next few years before falling out of favor in the eyes of Bill Belichick and the rest of the Patriots staff. Spikes played through injuries the whole season but eventually landed on the Injury Reserved, but not for his injuries. Spikes was late to a practice in January of 2014 during their playoff run and put a stamp on his time as a Patriot.

Brandon Spikes must have loved his time in the AFC East as he signed with our beloved Buffalo Bills on March 14th, 2014 for a modest, 1 year deal. Spikes is entering the prime of his career and he seems to be on a mission, which is taking down the New England Patriots.

Role in Buffalo: Brandon Spikes will play the MLB position in the 4-3 defense and play the ILB position in the 3-4 scheme next to Kiko Alonso, which is what he played in New England. Brandon Spikes is an excellent run-stopper but lacks the fluidity in his hips to be successful in coverage. He's a two down thumper that consistently fills holes and can really lay the boom on whoever is toting the rock against his team.

I'm a huge fan of this signing. Any time you can sign a divisional rival who has been as solid as Spikes has been with the sudden hate in his heart that he has for the Patriots. If you are reading this and are unfamiliar with the subliminal shots Spikes has taken towards his ex-team, you must not have read his Twitter feed over the last month. His Twitter handle will be published at the end of this post in the Fun Fact section because that's exactly what his Twitter material has been, fun.

I wish the Spikes deal was longer but that's being selfish on my behalf. I'm just happy he's a Buffalo Bill and I'll take it one year at a time if that's what he feels most comfortable doing. I look forward to the fire and passion he brings to the field, which is something I feel that our defense has sorely lacked over the years. He can be the stalwart in the middle, moving Kiko to the outside where he excels in pass coverage. Kiko is fluid and can run while Spikes, as previously mentioned, is thicker and can stop the run well. They are the perfect compliment to each other.
