Welcome to Buffalo: Anthony Dixon (RB)

Name: Anthony Dixon

Position: RB

Age: 26

Height: 6'1

Weight: 233 lbs.

College: Mississippi State

Drafted: 6th Round, 173rd overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Previous NFL Team: San Francisco 49ers

Contract Figures: Signed with the Bills on March 15th, 2014 - 3 Years, $3.5 Million Total. $1,016,666 in 2014.

Anthony Dixon was born in Mississippi where he played football at Terry High School. He had a strong high school career as a RB and went on to play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He turned down an offer to play at the University of Alabama so he was definitely a sought after prospect coming out of high school. Dixon felt like he would get more playing time at Mississippi State and that held true as he got playing time as a true freshman, setting records for freshman rushing attempts, yards and touchdowns.

Anthony Dixon kept on re-writing the record books as a Bulldog, this time in his senior season when he set the record for single-season rushing with 1,391 yards. He led his team in rushing all four years which was only done 6 times prior.

Dixon entered the NFL as a power back prospect at the RB position. Dixon fell a bit in the draft by pre-draft projections but was eventually scooped up by the San Francisco 49ers in the 6th round.

Anthony Dixon went on to play a complimentary role for the 49ers behind Frank Gore, chipping in with carries when Gore was tired, more frequently towards the goal line and was a key special teams player which may be what attracted the Buffalo Bills to the Terry, Mississippi native. He signed with Buffalo on March 15th, 2014.

Role in Buffalo: Anthony Dixon's main role in Buffalo will be on special teams along with last years special teams ace Marcus Easley where they'll look to strengthen a unit that struggled mightily last year. The special teams unit seems to be a focal point this off-season. Many people called for the head of Special Teams coach Danny Crossman, a close friend of Bills head coach Doug Marrone, after a season of many more lows than highs including games against the Cleveland Browns & New England Patriots. Instead of moving on from Crossman, it looks like Marrone feels it was the players, rather than the coach and the Bills are looking to shore up the unit with the signings of players like Corey Graham and now Anthony Dixon.

Dixon's hard work on special teams will be sure to earn him some carries on offense, especially with the plague of injuries at the position the last few years. CJ Spiller has been dealing with a bum ankle that taxes his most important attribute, which is his speed and Fred Jackson, getting older always seems to be banged up but that will happen with how hard Fred Jackson plays every snap. Having a bowling ball type RB for the goal line carries will definitely help the Bills in the red zone. Staring into the backfield at Frank Summers leading the way for Anthony Dixon, one yard out from the end zone isn't a position I would want to be in as an opposing LB.

I fully expect the Bills to bring in another RB via the draft or UDFA, along with current Bill Ronnie Wingo, to compete with Anthony Dixon to be the teams 3rd RB. I don't mind this signing at all. Competition is never a bad thing.

Fun Facts:
  • His hair makes him look like he has a spider on top of his head.
  • He has the word 'Boobie' in his Twitter handle which is always fun (@Boobie24Dixon)
