Welcome to Buffalo: Jarius Wynn (DL)

Name: Jarius Wynn

Position: DE

Age: 27

Height: 6'3

Weight: 285 lbs.

College: Georgia

Drafted: 6th Round, 182nd overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Previous NFL Team: Dallas Cowboys

Contract Figures: Signed with the Bills on April 8th, 2014 - 1 Year, Financials TBA

Jarius Wynn is from Augusta, Georgia and attended Lincolnton where he was an All-State OL in 2003 and an All-State DL in 2004. Wynn went on to play at Georgia Military College where he was a Second-Team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American. He was the team captain and was named defensive MVP in 2006. Wynn parlayed that success into an opportunity to play football at the University of Georgia where he led the team in tackles in 2007 and chipped in with 54 tackles the following season in 2008.

Wynn was drafted in the 6th round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He has had a very pedestrian career thus far, getting cut by the Packers in 2010, re-signed by the Packers in 20101, cut by the Packers in 2012, signed by the Titans in 2012, signed by the Chargers in 2013, cut by the Chargers in 2013, signed by the Cowboys in 2013, ultimately signing with the Bills in 2014.

I remember him playing for the Green Bay Packers and remember him getting some playing time but lost track of him after that.

Role in Buffalo: This is the least exciting signing by the Bills this free agency so far, partly because they've had some pretty good signings thus far and partly because this is a very unexciting signing. Wynn isn't much more than a warm body at a position where the Bills need warm bodies after transitioning from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense. Wynn is a prototypical 4-3 DE where they'll have players such as Jerry Hughes and Manny Lawson who I personally think are better suited for the 3-4. Wynn is insurance in case the Bills don't strengthen the position through the draft.

I don't hate the signing but I can't say I like it either. I would much rather have re-signed Alex Carrington but then again, Carrington is better suited for the 3-4 and would be a DT in the 4-3 but I guess I'm just a bit salty the Bills let Carrington walk for so little money. Don't be surprised if Wynn doesn't make the Bills 53-man roster when September rolls around. That would mean they brought in someone better to backup Mario Willams, Jerry Hughes and Manny Lawson, which would be a good move on their behalf as the key to taking down the Patriots seems to be a relentless pass rush from the edges and that happens with fresh legs and high motors so a deep, talented DE rotation will go a long way in deciding the AFC East.

Fun Facts:
  • Pronounces his name Jarius, which is the incorrect way you've probably been pronouncing Jairus Byrd's name all these years which means you'll probably pronounce his name 'Jairus' which is the incorrect way to pronounce Mr. Wynn's first name but the correct way to pronounce former Bill, Jairus Byrd's name. Ugh. That was one of my biggest pet peeves.
  • He's also the cousin of former NFL great RB, Garrison Hearst, who in my opinion had one of the roundest noses in NFL history.
